Harold
Some stories are difficult to tell. Harold’s is difficult to comprehend.
Harold was one of more than 100 animals confiscated from a recent hoarding situation in Central Kentucky, all found living in deplorable conditions.
When we first saw his face, we thought Harold was an old man.
He isn’t.
Harold is only 6 years old.
Years of neglect and what appears to be physical abuse have aged a dog who should still have so much life ahead of him.
And then we learned something even more heartbreaking.
Harold is completely blind.
Our veterinary team does not believe an underlying medical condition stole his vision. Based on their evaluation, they believe his blindness may have been caused by strangulation.
Someone may have taken Harold’s sight.
But they did not take Harold.
They didn’t take his ability to trust.
They didn’t take his desire to explore.
And they certainly didn’t take his will to keep moving forward.
We don’t know how long Harold has lived in darkness, but watching him today is incredible. He is learning his surroundings, adapting beautifully and navigating a world he cannot see with more courage than most of us could imagine.
Harold spent six years learning how cruel the world could be.
Now we get to spend the rest of his life showing him how kind it can be.
His story doesn’t end in that house.
