When we talk about animal abuse, our minds often think of physical harm, but abuse can also come in the form of medical neglect.
Meet Chrissy, a young dog recently brought into Louisville Metro Animal Services as a stray. At first, she seemed okay, but within days, staff noticed she was becoming very ill. Tests soon confirmed their worst fears: Chrissy had parvovirus.
Parvo is highly contagious, leads to immense suffering, and can be deadly for unvaccinated dogs. It’s a heartbreaking disease, especially because it’s preventable with vaccinations.
Once LMAS reached out to us, Chrissy was taken to the hospital for evaluation where it was discovered that she wasn’t just battling parvovirus. Her body was also fighting parainfluenza, canine respiratory coronavirus, mycoplasma pneumonia, and canine pneumonia.
Because her immune system was so weakened, she also developed aspiration pneumonia. Her misery could have been prevented with routine vet care.
Radiography also revealed that someone cruelly shot Chrissy three times with a BB gun.
Despite the way this young dog has been treated and neglected, she is still so sweet and loves us.
