Lad, a Rough Collie, came to The Arrow Fund on February 10, 2014 from Davvies County, KY. He had been shot in his muzzle, and the lower half of his jaw was severely damaged. The Arrow Fund immediately transferred him to Blue Pearl where he could receive emergency medical care from the specialists at Blue Pearl. Upon examination, the doctors found that Lad was extremely underweight (only 41 lbs on intake) and was a 1 on a scale of 1 to 9, with 1 being the lowest possible before death. The gunshot wound appeared to be at least 6 days old, if not more, and was severely infected. Once he was strong enough, the front of the lower portion of Lad’s jaw needed to be removed to get rid of the infected tissue that would not be able to heal. We are taking Lad’s care one day at a time to allow his mouth and jaw to heal and let him gain some weight – when he is ready, we will look into all options, possibly reconstruction. An investigation is underway to find the person(s) responsible for what happened to Lad; this is all we can say on the investigation at this point but will update with more details as soon as we are able.
Age: Under 1 Year
Breed: Rough Collie
Color: Sable and White
JUST IN – CHARGES ARE EXPECTED TO BE FILED IN THE CASE OF LAD –
The below words were taken from the Daviess County Sheriff’s Office facebook page :
Charges are expected early next week in the case of the Collie, Lad who was shot in the first week of February.
HE IS RESTING NOW AND HAD A GOOD DAY .
“Lad” is enjoying his more frequent feedings ! He eats every meatball that crosses his path ! The staff at Blue Pearl are very attached to this baby, as is everyone who meets him ! For now he is healing and the focus is on a steady and slow weight gain plan.
This picture was taken while we were having a “play date”! He loves interaction. He especially loves very gentle massage – it must feel good on his thin body – he paws you as if to say – “please don’t stop” ! Calling it a night – dream sweet all zzzzzzzzzz
“LAD” LOOKING AND WATCHING VISITORS IN THE PARKING LOT ! HE IS SO CURIOUS !
Spent time with “Lad” today – we went for a small walk and then we went into the largest visiting room and just hung out together. He loved watching the activity in the parking lot. All is going well with “Lad” – he is healing from surgery . His weight is 46.6 . He was 41 upon arrival. He had maintained weight on the feeding tube but then lost a little when the feeding tube had a kink in it. Now that the feeding tube is pulled we should see his weight go up. He is still so emaciated – we want it to go up slowly . His feedings have been increased from a can every 6 hours to a can every 4 hours. He is happy about this ! We want to thank all that have sent him gifts – we are rotating them and he loves everything. “Lad” is loved by the staff and is being spoiled – which he so deserves !!!!
Some have asked about the investigation . It is still ongoing. So we have nothing to say. Hopefully we will all know something soon. We all want the person who did this to be charged !
Thanks everyone for loving “Lad”. Goodnight – it is 2:00 am . Long day .
Dream Sweet zzzzzzzzz
“Lad ” received a new bib ! “DROOL IS COOL” – many thanks to all that are sending this sweet boy gifts ! I also took him a beautiful hand sewn flannel blanket that someone sent. We went into a room today and spent about three hours playing , resting, and snuggling ! It was so much fun ! He played with several of his babies !
He is eating well and drinking (a sloppy drinker – but who cares ! ) Really long day – so goodnight all and thanks for loving “Lad” and the rest of The Arrow Fund kids.
Dream Sweet zzzzzzzzzzz~Rebecca~
GREAT NEWS – HIS FEEDING TUBE WAS PULLED TODAY ! HE IS STILL EATING A CAN OF FOOD EVERY 6 HOURS . “LAD” IS OFFERED WATER EVERY 2 HOURS . A CLOSE EYE IS ON HIS TONGUE TO MAKE SURE IT IS STAYING HYDRATED. SO FAR SO GOOD !
PLEASE READ THE BELOW PARAGRAPH –
The Arrow Fund has been working tirelessly with our supporters and BluePearl Veterinary Partners to provide the highest quality of care for Lad. We are doing everything possible to keep Lad comfortable during his recovery, and to develop a treatment plan going forward. We have been in contact with the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital at the University of California, Davis. Blue Pearl surgeons are currently discussing Lad’s case with UC Davis oral surgeons . UC Davis is a world leader in veterinary medicine, and if the surgeons agree that Lad could benefit from treatment at UC Davis, options will be discussed at that point.. This is not an immediate decision that can be made due to Lad’s extreme malnutrition at this point. He is making tremendous strides to be healthy enough for further treatment. We appreciate the outpouring of well wishes from our supporters and any insight UC Davis may be able to offer into providing Lad the best possible outcome. This is a matter between Lad’s surgeons at Blue Pearl , UC Davis Vets and The Arrow Fund – rest assured the best decision for Lad will be made .
Wishing you all a peaceful night ….

THIS WAS A BEAUTIFUL MOMENT …
“Lad” as you can see is very interested in the food. Bless his heart . He is tolerating the food well. He is getting one full can every 6 hours. We are so happy and proud of this boy and I know you all are too . So let us enjoy another happy update for “Lad” . Thanks to all of you that have sent in toys , bibs, beds, etc. It is so appreciated ! Also ,thanks to everyone that has donated to his care. Any amount is appreciated as long as it comes from the heart – and I know it does . I would like to thank the entire staff at Blue Pearl for the excellent care given to our babies. Wishing you all a peaceful evening.

“Lad” ate some meatballs today ! Meatballs were formed out of canned food and placed inside his mouth ! HE LOVED IT ! Just think of how long this boy has gone without eating through his mouth ! He is being fed a full can every 6 hours . The feeding tube is still in place just to make sure all goes well – so far so good . I will try to get a video of him eating soon- that is a beautiful sight ….. He still is in LOVE with the bunny a kind “Lad Lover” sent ( sorry do not have the name of the person who sent his large realistic looking brown bunny – please accept out thanks ) .
This bunny really makes this boy happy – I would love to know who sent it and where you got it because we will need more ! LOL ! He loves it so much – guess you picked it up with his mouth ? Yes, “Lad” did !!!! So today we report only happy news !

Well today “Lad ” got another bed ( Thanks Diane) ! So now he has a few that can be rotated as they need to be cleaned. He also is sporting a new bib ! He also was sent a Stuffed Rabbit – HE LOVES IT ! He was using his tongue to play and lick the rabbit ! He is still having his routine feedings through the tube . Very exciting – he now is a larger type run – where I can get in with him . WHAT FUN THAT IS ! He is enjoying having more room. This large caged kennel is still in the main room of the hospital – so he is still monitored 24 hours a day. Thanks to all of you that have sent him bibs , blankets , and toys , etc…. He will use them all . “Lad” being “Lad” – he felt when he got his new Rabbit toy that his friend “Red Baron” could use a stuffed toy so he gave his green frog to “Red Baron” ! Please continue prayers for our boy “Lad” ! (“Red Baron” too )
FYI – feeling sad – we got a call today from Henderson County ,Ky. – another Dog Shooting ! A 4 to 6 month old puppy (Heeler Mix) was shot twice – her name was “Poppy” and we were going to set up transport to get her here to The Arrow Fund . This baby died of cardiac arrest before she made it here. Thanks to Henderson County for calling and reaching out to us for help. So please keep Baby “Poppy” in your heart tonight …. So sad – I am hoping they will find out who shot “Poppy” and prosecute !
Thank you all for your continued support ! Working together we CAN and DO great things….

THE ARROW FUND’S LAD, COLLIE SHOT IN THE FACE AND EMACIATED – A VIDEO AS PROMISED, LOOK HOW HAPPY OUR BOY IS!
UPDATE: This video shows Lad’s true loving and bubbly personality! He is very animated when he socializes with all of us! He is still tolerating his feedings well. His attempts at drinking water are a little better every day, but we are still adding some water to his feeding tube to ensure he gets enough hydration. His staples and stitches are looking good too!
Thank you to everyone for your continued love and prayers. Please ask your friends and family to “Like” The Arrow Fund at https://www.facebook.com/TheArrowFund. You can also visit us at thearrowfund.org . – Kelly, The Arrow Fund
He is doing well with his tube feedings . He does want to be up and out a bit more . Once his mouth heals we are going to try feeding him through his mouth (wet food) – very excited about this ! Many Arrow Fund supporters went to Frankfort today for Humane Lobby Day to try and get some laws passed in Kentucky. Kentucky is the worst state when it comes to laws to protect animals ! So today we were fighting and speaking for “Lad” and the many other animals that need better protection. We are their voice ! Thanks to everyone for your support for “Lad” and The Arrow Fund. We truly appreciate you all ! www.thearrowfund.org

Update – “Lad” came through surgery and is doing well. He is pictured here with tech Cammi gently waking him from surgery . The tooth broken from the bullet was taken out . The surgeons are pleased as to how the healing is coming. We now need to get some weight on this boy ! His feeding tube is working great . So thankful that “Lad” came through surgery okay . We had a case come in today – a Black Lab with a large facial tumor that did not make it ….His name was “Onyx” . Our hearts are heavy for sure at The Arrow Fund about this beautiful boy that was so neglected . So to see the healing going on with “Lad” is very special. Before I left the hospital “Lad” was awake and pawing me if I stopped petting him .
The Arrow Fund wants to thanks Dr. Becca Hodshon and all of the staff at Blue Pearl for the excellent care they give our babies. Wishing you all a good night zzzzzz

UPDATE- “LAD” DAY 7 POST OP -FROM REMOVING A PORTION OF HIS LOWER JAW.
“LAD” FEEDING TUBE IS BACK IN PLACE AND WORKING – SURGERY TO TAKE OUT TOOTH DESTROYED BY BULLET AND SURGERY TO COVER BONE THAT IS EXPOSED WILL HAPPEN TOMORROW.
“Lad” was having trouble with his feeding tube- so this became the number 1 priority . It is now back in place and is functioning correctly. So the plan is to have surgery tomorrow . Please keep “Lad” close to your heart . Thanks to EVERYONE for loving “Lad” and supporting The Arrow Fund so that we can help him.
Donations are greatly appreciated , if you are able. Our website is www.thearrowfund.org and checks may be mailed to The Arrow Fund P.O. Box 1127 Prospect, Kentucky 40059 . Wishing you all peace~Rebecca~The Arrow Fund~

Today “Lad” was up and walking around . He was visiting all the techs at Blue Pearl ! What a sweetie ! He is off of food tonight . Tomorrow they will sedate him to get a good look into his mouth and assess how the healing process is going . They will also remove a tooth that was badly damaged from one of the bullets. So please keep Sweet “Lad ” close to your heart .
Donations are always appreciated, if you are able. Please go to our website at www.thearrowfund.org and checks may be sent to The Arrow Fund P.O. Box 1127 Prospect, Kentucky 40059 . Update – “Lad” Day 5 Post Op –
Thanks to Arrow Fund friend Krista who brought “Lad” his very own Lambchop ! He really loves it and is very curious when it squeaks ! He pawed at it and licked it ! Well our precious boy weighed in at 45 pounds today – he came in at 41 pounds ! Plus – exciting news – he is off of IV’s – he gets all meds through his feeding tube now. This is fantastic! He is getting enough fluids with the water mixed in with his tube feedings . So not being hooked up makes it a lot more comfortable for him. He is still tolerating his tube feedings – they do take between 30 to 45 minutes at each feeding. He is now fed every 6 hours.
The staff at Blue Pearl are very taken with this precious boy . WE ALL ARE !!! We are so thankful to YOU ALL for your concern and kindness. Please keep “Lad” close to your heart as we continue to care for his every need.
Donations are always appreciated , if you are able www.thearrowfund.org or checks can be mailed to The Arrow Fund P.O. Box 1127 Prospect , Kentucky 40059 .
Wishing you all peace … Goodnight ~Rebecca~The Arrow Fund~
“LAD” WAS USING HIS TONGUE TO LICK HIS SOFT COLLAR- THIS IS VERY EXCITING ! SO EVERYDAY WE ARE SEEING MORE MOVEMENT IN HIS TONGUE !
“Lad” came to us weighing 41 pounds and today he was 44 pounds ! You can tell this sweet boy wants to get out and really be loved on but for now we must keep him still and crated most of the time. He is a lover for sure ! He is still on IV Meds , IV antibiotics , and IV fluids. When his stitches come out from his surgery – we will then try to hand feed him soft food. For anyone that wants to send something to “Lad” – he will need Bibs (Large Bibs) it would be cool if they had his name on them ! LOL ! He salivates and does not have the bottom jaw to catch it. We also would love for this boy to have an extra large tempurpedic bed . He is so thin – he really needs the cushion .
Please continue to send love and prayers his way. Donations are always welcome – www.thearrowfund.org and checks can be mailed to The Arrow Fund P.O. Box 1127 Prospect, Kentucky 40059 –
Thanks to you all for loving this special boy and supporting The Arrow Fund .

Update – “Lad” Day 3 Post Op –
“Lad” is still tolerating his feedings well. Each feeding takes about 30 minutes and he is being fed every 5 hours . As you see he is standing up while Cammi is feeding him. When he heals – we do hope that “Lad” will be able to eat soft food – chances are he will need to be hand fed . But that will be no big deal to do for such a handsome boy ! Again – plans could change as he makes progress . We literally are taking this 1 day at a time . Exciting news – “Lad” came in at 41 pounds and he now weighs 43.6 . This is great . We want him to gain slow and easy . “Lad” is really showing a zest for life – you can really tell he is still a baby ! So sweet ! He has charmed me and all of the staff ! I also know he has charmed you all too . Watching this boy get stronger every day is just heartwarming. He was in such pain upon arrival…
A lot of people are asking about reconstruction- we will look into all options – but for now- he needs his mouth and jaw area to heal and he needs to gain some weight . He still is so very thin. Thanks to you all for loving “Lad” !
There is an active investigation on this case – please let the officials handle this – that is all I can say at this point . Please continue to send “Lad” love, light, and prayers.
Donations for his care can be made at our website www.thearrowfund.org or checks can be mailed to The Arrow Fund P.O. Box 1127 Prospect, Kentucky 40059 .
Peace to you all ~Rebecca~The Arrow Fund~
“Lad” continues to tolerate his food through the feeding tube- there seems to be no sign of re-feeding syndrome. His amounts will increase as the days go by. He is holding steady on his weight. “Lad” is trying to groom himself and use his tongue a little when trying to drink – so more movement is seen with his tongue. This is great news ! He still is on IV Pain Meds, IV Antibiotics , and Fluids . His spirits are really good . He is receiving 24 hour a day care at Blue Pearl – so he is monitored all of the time. He has tested negative for heartworm – which is always wonderful news ! We would like to thank everyone from around the world that have sent “Lad” well wishes . We, at The Arrow Fund are extremely thankful ! Donations are always welcome www.thearrowfund.org – checks can be mailed to The Arrow Fund P.O. Box 1127 Prospect, Kentucky 40059 .
Peace to you all ~Rebecca~The Arrow Fund~
(Her Tweet last night ! )
Thank you Wynonna for spreading the word about the good work of The Arrow Fund. My conversation with her last night was life changing – she is so beautiful inside and out…. Feeling Blessed ……
~Rebecca~The Arrow Fund~
“LAD” MADE A VERY GOOD FRIEND TODAY !
WYNONNA JUDD CALLED ME TODAY TO ASK ABOUT “LAD”. WE TALKED FOR OVER AN HOUR – I SENT HER PICTURES OF HIM. SHE TALKED TO BOTH SURGEONS AND THANKED THEM FOR THE IMPORTANT WORK THAT THEY DO. SHE IS A BEAUTIFUL SOUL INSIDE AND OUT. WE WILL HAVE SOME SURPRISES IN THE FUTURE ! BLESS YOU WYNONNA FOR BELIEVING IN THE MISSION OF THE ARROW FUND AND LOVING “LAD ” !
Today “Lad” did great – he even wanted to play while I was visiting him. He is on a schedule with his feedings through the feeding tube . Food will be increased daily .Exciting news- he is moving his tongue and trying to drink ! He is getting some water down. This boy is the sweetest baby. To think of the barbaric act of someone shooting him multiple times and then him already responding to love is just so amazing. The investigation is still on to find the person responsible for shooting this boy. Please continue to send love, light , and prayers to “Lad”. Donations are always appreciated ,if you are able. Please go to our website www.thearrowfund.org – checks may be mailed to The Arrow Fund P.O. Box 1127 Prospect, Kentucky 40059. Thanks to you all for the support that you have given for to our Angel “Lad”.
Peace to you all ~Rebecca~The Arrow Fund~
“Lad” was stable enough yesterday to have general anesthesia to have his wound better assessed and for a feeding tube to be placed. Upon clipping and cleaning his fractured jaw it was discovered that the tissue of the chin was cold with no blood supply and the tissues were dead. The only healthy portion remaining contained blood supply to the tongue. Three wounds were found, two under his jaw and an additional wound on the side of his face entering his mouth. Metallic fragments were found in the infected, dead tissue of the jaw. Because the front part of the jaw had no blood supply and would not heal, even by fixing the fracture, it was elected to remove the broken front part of the jaw. The dead tissue was removed and healthy tissue closed together. Lad’s tongue will permanently protrude from his mouth but he should be able to learn to eat and drink. Because of the extent of the injury, there was little healthy tissue remaining. After he heals he may require an additional procedure to improve his ability to eat and lap water. A feeding tube was also placed today to begin slowly feeding him.
The picture shown is of “Lad” this morning – he is still on pain meds but he is sitting up and watching the staff . He is in good spirits and is loving any and all attention. Such a sweet boy . He does have one fractured tooth that will need to be taken out, but we did not want him under anesthesia any longer. His facial surgery was lengthy – so we will do this another day. The plan is now to get nutrition into this angel . This boy will certainly steal your heart. SO SWEET !!!!
Our thanks to Dr. Becca Hodshon and Dr. Patti Sura (Surgeons) and the surgical team as well as the entire staff at Blue Pearl. Our thanks to you all for the support given to The Arrow Fund . The kindness from the community and world has been amazing. Please know we are trying to get back with all of you that contacted us – so please be patient . Again, a heartfelt thank you …
If you would like to donate – please go to our website www.thearrowfund.org – checks may be mailed to The Arrow Fund P.O.Box 1127 Prospect , Kenctucky 40059 .

Thanks to you all ~Rebecca~The Arrow Fund~
Please watch this coverage from WHAS 11 on The Arrow Fund’s “Lad” . ~Rebecca~The Arrow Fund~
Update – “Lad” – I spent quite a bit of time with “Lad” today – It was determined that the wound has been there for longer that originally thought . The smell of rotten tissue was so bad. This boy is so sweet, he is a heartbreaker for sure . Every time I stopped petting him he pawed me to continue . I must say I am very worried -much of the tissue I saw looked black . It also was confirmed to be gunshot wounds- there are three bullet holes in his mouth area. Plans were to insert feeding tube during surgery.
I will post when we get the full report from the surgeon .
If you would like to donate to help “Lad” please go to our website.
www.thearrowfund.org – Checks may also be mailed to The Arrow Fund P.O. Box 1127 Prospect, Kentucky 40059 . This case is so disturbing – thank you to everyone who is following “Lad” . Please continue to send this baby boy your love.
UPDATE- “LAD”- SWEET 8 MONTH OLD COLLIE SHOT IN THE FACE – ALSO SEVERELY EMACIATED – ONLY 41 LBS.
We had planned on inserting a feeding tube last night – but “Lad” was running a temp. and overall to weak to put it in. The doctors felt he needed some rest , relief from pain , and fluids. The feeding tube hopefully will be placed today. His temp. is coming down. He actually got up during the night and urinated when taken outside. At this time , he is resting and is being kept comfortable. Please watch comments through the day on this post – I will post updates in the comment section through the day and do an updated post tonight. I want to thank everyone for the loving and touching comments about our sweet “Lad” . Please know he is at a hospital (Blue Pearl) and he is monitored 24 hours a day . We have an uphill battle with “Lad” with the many problems he is facing . I told him yesterday of the many people all over the world that love him . I also told him that nobody would ever hurt him again….. As I told him this – it was as if he heard me and stretched his long legs out as I gently stroked his thin body . Bless his heart….
Please continue to share his story and keep sending the love and prayers his way. Donations would be great, if you are able . www.thearrowfund.org – donations may be made online or checks can be sent to The Arrow Fund P.O.Box 1127 Prospect, Kentucky 40059 . Sending thanks to you all for the love and support that you give The Arrow Fund . Peace ~Rebecca~The Arrow Fund~
HE IS IN CRITICAL CONDITION
“LAD” IS IN BAD SHAPE – HIS INFECTION FROM THE WOUND TO HIS MOUTH AREA IS SEVERELY INFECTED. THIS WOUND FROM A GUNSHOT HAPPENED ABOUT 5 TO 6 DAYS AGO. SO HE HAS SUFFERED THAT LONG UNABLE TO EAT . PERHAPS HE GOT SOME LIQUID FROM SNOW – WE ARE UNSURE. HIS JAW IS BROKEN AND THERE IS DEBRIS OF BONE AND TEETH EMBEDDED IN THE GUM AREA. HE WILL REQUIRE SURGERY WHICH WILL MOST LIKELY INVOLVE EXTERNAL FIXATORS ON BOTH SIDES . THIS SURGERY IS NOT POSSIBLE UNTIL THE INFECTION HAS CLEARED SOME. HE IS SEVERELY EMACIATED – HE IS A LARGE DOG AND ONLY WEIGHS 41 POUNDS ! HIS FUR IS COVERING UP -WHAT LOOKS LIKE A SKELETON ! HE IS A 1 ON A BODY SCALE OF 1 TO 9 . 1 BEING THE ONLY NUMBER HE COULD BE AND STILL BE ALIVE ! HE WILL BE SEDATED LATER TODAY AND A FEEDING TUBE INSERTED . HE MUST BE FED SLOWLY – HE IS SO BAD HIS BODY NEEDS TO LEARN HOW TO PROCESS FOOD AGAIN. FOR NOW – HE IS ON PAIN MEDS – (WHICH HE WAS PUT ON IMMEDIATELY AT BLUE PEARL ) , IV FLUIDS , AND IV ANTI BIOTICS. THE SHELTER WILL BE IN TOUCH WITH US – AND THIS CASE IS UNDER INVESTIGATION . OUR THANKS TO THE SURGEONS AT BLUE PEARL AND THE STAFF . “LAD” IS JUST A BABY – HE IS ONLY ABOUT 8 MONTHS OLD !
“Lad” was picked up last night by animal control in Davvies County. I commend the shelter- they sent him directly to a Vet. Sadly, when I called and asked what he had been given at the Vet . The answer I got shocked me – he was NOT given any pain meds, IV Fluids , or anti biotics. Very sad because this could mean life and death to this boy, as critical as he is.
The Arrow Fund will need your help – you know we want you to send love, light and prayers to “Lad ” . You also know that this case is going to be costly . We would really appreciate any and all donations ! You may donate on our website at www.thearrowfund.org and checks may be sent to The Arrow Fund P.O.Box 1127 Prospect, Kentucky 40059.
Thanks for supporting The Arrow Fund – we appreciate you all !
Working together we can make a difference…….
